There is nothing like a piece of fantastic news to officially launch our new online venture for duathletes in Ontario (and beyond). On March 28, word came that Triathlon Canada had awarded the 2014 Canadian Duathlon Championships to the Toronto Triathlon Festival weekend on July 12-13. The international distance race (10km run/40km bike/5km run) will be held on Sunday July 13, and will have 10 berths available per age group for the 2015 World Duathlon Championships in Adelaide, Australia. The full press release can be found here.
This is obviously fantastic news for duathletes. Though it took until the end of March for an announcement to be made, duathletes in Ontario and across Canada have another date to circle on their calendar. The last time Nationals was held in Toronto, it attracted a high caliber field that was highlighted by several domestic elite duathletes, including the 2013 Ironman 70.3 Muskoka champion Lionel Sanders. The mid-July date would make it a central event on the calendar for duathletes to focus on, and it is tucked conveniently in between the Ontario Sprint Distance Championships in May and the Ontario Standard Distance event in mid-September. It does however create a direct conflict with the Multisport Canada Gravenhurst event that is typically pretty well attended and provides a good midsummer barometer of readiness for duathletes targeting a fall “A” race. The course will be the same one featured in the 2012 version of the race, and will also share a race course with the wildly popular Olympic distance triathlon.
This step by Triathlon Canada is just another example of an opportunity available to duathletes to strut our stuff in 2014. Registration will be open at 9:00am ET on April 1, 2014 (tomorrow). So head over to the registration site and do your part to make these national championships a big one! Every extra person we have in the race is an extra bit of sway that we have, and an extra ounce of strength for our community. So let’s rise up and pack that transition zone! We hope TTF will fit in to your plans for 2014!

Some additional notes regarding this site…
Please check out our new home page. It outlines some of the features we have come up with for this blog that will be coming to you in the coming weeks. Navigating our articles is easy. Just click on the Articles link at the top and scroll through to find the article you would like. Additionally, you can use the Search bar at the top left hand portion of the page to narrow your search. And if you just want to browse a certain topic…just select a category from the left and browse away! Categories will be added as articles are submitted. If you wish to submit a piece to this site (perhaps for one of our features), you may submit an article using the link in the menu above. We just ask that you keep the content focused on duathlon and that you stick to approximately 500-1000 words with your submission.
While you’re at it, head over to our Schedule & Results page above, where many events from several different series are listed alongside the links to their sites, for your convenience. If you already have your schedule set, head over there for the registration links for each race. And if you don’t, it makes a wonderful resource for race planning!
Finally, though registration for the Toronto Triathlon Championships does not officially open until tomorrow, it is already open for the two major race series in Ontario. The Multisport Canada and Subaru Triathlon Race Series represent not one, but two opportunities for duathletes to race nearly every weekend during the summer. Putting on these events requires an incredible time commitment for a not-so-incredible payoff. The races depend upon our support in order to continue. If we want to continue to have a duathlon event alongside the triathlon events on these weekends, we need to show these race directors that we can be meet or even exceed their expectations for registration on any given weekend. So please, head over to their respective pages and get your registrations in ASAP!
On a final, personal note, we are looking forward to seeing you all on the start line in 2014. Larry and I would love to meet as many of you as we can at the races we are able to attend. So please, if we happen to be at the same races, come find us and say hi! Good luck in the upcoming season!
